Indeed, CPU is exactly the problem!
Actually though, in my case I'm using dual cpu machines that are
quite capable of running KDE or GNOME without stressing the
CPUs. I just don't have a lot of use for the functionality
provided. All that "desktop" stuff gets in my way, and I'm
very very pleased with a very fine tuned FVWM2 that has been
customized over many years to really match my particular needs
and abilities.
Which does bring up another point that is sometimes hard to
express. How easy an OS or an editor is in the first day, month
or even year or two may not be a very good indication of which
is the best. If a person has any intention of continued use for
the long term, the initial learning curve may be a stumbling
block but it is not definitive of the value which will be
available once a user begins to understand enough to really
customize each part to match the perceived needs.
It is really hard to tell people they *should* suffer through
whatever it takes to be comfortable with Linux and Emacs,
because a dozen years later the idea of being restricted to
something less productive is just intolerable.
