increase size of 'mount -o loop' partition?

I'm looking for some help.

Trying to modify my boot process to add USB support (to mount a USB
drive)

The procedure I found was to copy the boot sector image, use 'mount -o
loop'
to unpack the image into /tmp, and then modify the script to 'insmod'
the
USB modules, and finally copy the usb modules into the /lib directory of

the boot image (then unmount the image and install it where needed).

The problem I have is that after i do the mount, there is not enough
space
in the /tmp directory partition. I can modify the script, but I can
only
copy in one of the 4 modules.

Is there an option for mount to increase the size of the partition it
creates?
Can I increase the size of the boot image before I unpack it?
Any better ideas?

Thanks!
