I came across the same problem. Basically, I just did the basic
install of atk, glib, freetype and and whole mess of other stuff. To
get past this issue, try doing this:
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib:/usr/local/include:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
I hope this works for you. At least this will get you past the pango
installation. gtk+ installation is still a problem though. For me,
configure in gtk still doesn't seem to detect freetype or pangox.....
