I thought most news readers kept a "latest message downloaded
number" somewhere, so that when you asked it to download more headers
it new where to start.
The only way to trick it into downloading the same header again would
be to re-set that number.
By unsubscribing from the group you erase that number. Then you re-
subscribe and download the last 500 headers (or whatever) and that
would have the effect of getting that header (that you accidentally
deleted) back again.
By the way, I have done that many times. You tend to forget about
mechanics and start to edit the message before you press the
"followup" button. If you press delete while looking at the original
(say to snip something out) you end up deleting the message in total.
A useful feature of a news reader would be to *not allow* any editing
of the original message in the reader window. That would wake you up
to the fact that you hadn't pressed "follow up" yet.
