This is an internal value, and is not facing the network (afaik, am
newb)

suse is probably the best for this from what I have heard (?)

It is. However, keep in mind that the win experience is good at getting
you to believe that you do not have to do anything - it will do it for
you, often without telling you enough, or at all. This is not always an
advantage. So some level of user action is worth expecting. One reason
why committed linux users sometimes seem less sympathetic with your
plight may be that they find linux so worth while that they have
forgotten the windows-to-linux culture shock.

You might find this to be a little optimistic generally (yet) with
linux, although suse 9.1 actually did what you describe - automatic - on
a PII and a PIII I have tried installing. as a total newb I was
reassured. As you found, live CD is internet easy, although a full
installation into a (home) network took me into the samba functions and
sometimes 'terminal' use. no big deal, but a world away from the cushion
under the windowbox. btw 9.1 is better than 9.0 - things are moving
forward.
