Sorry what did you do?
Did you try to install either of those? Did you manage to install them?
Then what did you do?

What error message. "It opens"== what opens? and what do you mean by
"opens"

What do you try to get it to do? What error emssage do you get?

Whole disk formatted how?

It wouldn't work-- what wouldn;t work?
Ie, you really need to give us information in order that we can help you.

]Western Digital should have a diagnostic program (on their web site if it
]did not come with the drive) that can be run from a bootable DOS floppy.
]It can to a non-distructive test, or a destructive test (that tries
]writing/reading 1's and 0's), or can wipe the drive to all zeros to start
]fresh. So unless the drive is damaged or defective, it should be fixable,
]even if that means wiping all data from it.
]I don't know if your problems originated from some disk overlay system
](which should only be used if your BIOS does not support drives that
]size), or Gateway GoBack (which may use an unknown partition type), or
For Linux that is irrelevant. It uses the bios ONLY to boot the Linux OS.
Linux never uses the bios at all.
]something changing the geometry of your partition table (heads/cylinders).
]Both 64-bit WinXP Pro beta and SuSE 9.1 attempted to change my disk
]geometry on the fly (from 240 heads to 255 heads), but I recognized what
]SuSE was trying to do before it changed anything, due to all the work I
]had to do to fix my partition table when 64-bit XP messed it up
](partitions no longer ended on cyl. boundaries).
