room layout / floor plan / CAD software?

I am looking for software that helps me lay out a room. That is, I
enter the dimensions of the various items in the room, the dimensions
of the room itself, and am given an overhead view in which I can
arrange objects as I see fit. This is all 2D, height is irrelevant.

The software must be more efficient than the brute force method of
physically moving the objects around until a suitable layout is
chosen. Therefore, something that requires large amounts of
documentation to be read, or has an undocumented or unattainable set
of dependencies, or is otherwise going to be as substantial burden
will not be a reasonable solution.
