The Ethernet connection takes longer than the USB connection,
or any connection takes longer than no connection?

How much slower? Is there something like a 5 second delay on
startup? If so, it's probably a DNS lookup failure of some
sort. Many applications attempt to do a reverse-DNS lookup to
find out their hostname.

Depends on how the tables are set up.

Personally, I wouldn't run without a dedicated, external
firewall.

I think it depends on whether you're using the winsock driver
under Win98 or the other one (VLAN)? Under the winsock driver,
I think the windows machine is basically using the Linux
machine as an IP router, so the windows "machine" is OK if the
Linux machine is OK. I don't know how the other driver works.
Perhaps you should ask on the netraverse mailing list.
