KDE sound only as root

I'm using a hard disk install of Knoppix, and in most cases the sound
works fine. However, the actual sounds made by KDE for the system
notifications (closing a window, switching virtual desktop, etc) only
play when I'm logged on as root.

I've tried using other sound media players, and they all work fine -
only the system notifications have problems. I can use XMMS as a player
by specifying it in the Player Settings dialogue in the Control Center,
but I don't want to have to load that every time a sound plays.

As root, everything works perfectly, and, as far as I can tell, I've
enabled all the same options in the Control Centre as root. I've even
tried putting my normal user account in the root group to see if that
made any difference.

I've googled, but none of the solutions I've found helped - running
soundon as root gave 'command not found', everyone has complete access
to /dev/audio and /dev/dsp, and Running sndconfig makes no difference,
and I've made sure all the users are in the audio group.

I'm using libarts1 1.2.3-1, if that helps

Any help would be much appreciated
