    Edit the file /etc/inittab (as root) and change id:3:initdefault to
    id:5:initdefault.

    This works for RedHat, Mandrake, and Suse Linux

    Slackware uses runlevel 4 for a graphical login so change this line to
    read id:4:initdefault
