I have been using Linux pppoe for SBC adsl since 2002 (before it became
SBC Yahoo) without any problems (and without their software). It includes
nationwide dialup, which works with my Linux laptop in So.Cal. even though
my DSL account is in Illinois. Their PPPoE, PPP, pop3, smtp, webmail, and
news are all standard protocols that work with fine Linux.

Note the "unsupported" does not necessarily mean "will not work". It may
just mean that they (tech support) would not know how to help you.

I set up and registered my boss' SBC Yahoo DSL without even opening the CD
that came with it (per instructions on one of the SBC forums at
http://www.broadbandreports.com/ alias http://www.dslreports.com/ ). The
base modem they supply (5100b) is actually a modem/router that can be
configured to pass through your public IP, or allow your PC to do the
PPPoE.
