Which package manager causes the least problems?

ello,

I have been playing with Linux for a while now. I have three machines with
Linux. One with Slackware 10 and one dual boot with Libranet/Win98 and one
with Debian Sarge.

I have played, or tried to play with, SUSE 9.0 (probably bad cds-wouldn't
work), Mandrake 7.1 and 7.2 some time ago. RedHat 7.X., Knoppix (very
cool), Slackware 7.X, as well as a few more I can't even remember.

I installed Slackware to learn to install software and set it up by hand.
It is my understanding that Slack is one of the best ways to learn Linux.
I actually was slightly disappointed that x server just worked. I was
under the impression I would have to fiddle with it to get a gui.

BTW: I have read you can manually install software with Debian but to be
honest I believe it would be harder because of apt. Maybe I'm wrong.

My problem. On Libranet or Debian sometimes apt-get breaks the system. I
did an apt-get kino and my x server stopped working. Now it was very easy
to get it working again but it doesn't look as good as it did. My k3b had
trouble after I installed it using apt-get. On an earlier machine k3b was
working fine until I upgraded it. Then it quit. I had to find, and repair
a problem that gave me a "your last session lasted less than 10 seconds"
error after apt-get ing something.

My question. Which package manager seems to have the least problems?

I do love apt, when it works perfectly. I am getting a new computer and
won't have Win98 to fall back on. I refuse to install the latest from M$.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The reasons I still have Win98 are: video editing, video cds, recording
internet radio, watching and recording TV on my old ATI All In Wonder.
Side note: I am planning on building a PVR very soon.

I can, and do at times, use Linux to: edit web pages, re-size photos and
add text and line art, surf the web, answer emails, listen to internet
radio while I'm working. Burn or copy my cds while I'm doing any or all of
the above.

I use Win98 most of the time because I get tired of dual booting my main
machine.
