Greetings -
I am trying to migrate myself and my family of Windows users to
Linux. I chose SuSE and have been using it on an old spare laptop
for several months. I had winmodem and display size problems, but
managed to persevere. I was planning to install Linux in the main
computer this weekend. Then today I discover that I can't dial out
to the internet any more. The relevant log statement is:

   pppd[0]: Failed to open /dev/ttyLT0: No such device or address

Then it disconnects and exits with a code 7.

I went to look and found /dev/ttyLT0 and /dev/modem -> /dev/ttyLT0.
Permissions for ttyLT0 are set at crw-rw-r-- , it's in the dialup
group, and it hasn't been touched since April.

The only thing I can think of was last weekend, I installed some of
SuSE's security patches. I thought that would be a good thing to do.
Could this have reset something? Do SuSE updates tend to upset things
generally?
