Mandrake does quite well with no GUI. I have even run it headless (no
monitor) as a web server and SNMP network monitor.

Mandrake 10.0 and FVMW2 work just fine. I don't usually use it so it was not
installed. Since you claim "recent distros" have problems, I thought I
would install it. I opened a window and su-ed to root, typed "urpmi fvwm2"
and it installed automatically. A right mouse click on my KDE background
let me start a new Xsession and I logged right into a FVWM2 session, no
problems and no reboots. As for vnc, I have had no problems with that at
all, although I would rather use x forwarding though ssh.

So run FVWM2 on Linux. There are NO problems in doing so. Ever think there
are REASONS why major film studios are choosing Linux rather than FreeBSD?
Ever think that there are REASONS why Linux in on 4 of the 5 world's
fastest computers and not FreeBSD. Yeah, I hear the BSDers brag about
FreeBSD, but when the rubber hits the road, it is most likely Linux that
    gets installed.
