If you haven't downloaded Knoppix, you should. It's a great
trouble-shooter, and rescue system; (well, actually it's a complete
Linux system on a CD). Its relevance here is that it is the master at
detecting and configuring hardware, and there's a good chance it will find
your sound chip. Then, do a "lsmod" and find out which module got plugged
in.

You might also indicate which chipset your system is using: i.e., VIA,
SiS, ALi, etc. For instance, my recent motherboards have VIA chipsets,
and use a via82cxxx_audio module. They also load the ac97_codec. I can't
claim to understand the relation between a "AC97" sound chip, and the fact
that other chips use an ac97_codec, but it makes me wonder if it's not
analgous to the software emulation of the old SoundBlaster Pro scheme.

Another place to look for clues as to what sound chip you really have is
to look at /proc/pci, which should have an entry for audio. (Mine says:
 Multimedia audio controller:
VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 80).
again showing the relationship to the AC97 scheme though its on a VIA
chip.
