Looks like you forgot to install an X server. No, gdm does not depend
on the X server because it is perfectly possible to run a headless box
that serves X terminals.
Also, did you try to edit gdm.conf? "/usr/X11R6/bin/x" should be
"/usr/X11R6/bin/X".
