OT: What do you think about Solaris going o.s.?

I met Jonathan Schwartz, President and COO of Sun Microcomputer last Wed. He
was in Sacramento to give a presentation. I pitched him on the idea of buying
our Jaya123 (http://www.jaya123.com) web service. He's going to have someone
look into it but it's not going to happen (unless Google or Yahoo get
interested... and that could happen this year.)

Anyway, he talked about Solaris going o.s. I'm wondering if anyone has any
RATIONAL comments about this, Sun's strategy, and perhaps Solaris in general.
Is it a "threat" to Linux?

Schwartz said (in his public presentation, not our private conversation) that
Linux==Red Hat. From his perspective in seeking to attract mega-large
corporate customers, I think he has a point.

This week I got a contract from Laura Rich (author of bestselling bio of Paul
Allen... and editor of Fast Company) to write 12 short (800 word) pieces for
the Inc Magazine and Fast Company Magazine website this year. I'm looking for
some background material on Solaris vs. Linux for one of them.

I won't quote anyone nor will I use any content here without *express written
permission* of the poster (and Inc/FC will probably fact-check it as well).

I will also post this notice on one other group I'm on, a.o.l.s. There are
some good "thinkers" over there too.... and I'm a Slackware user.

Again, I'm looking for RATIONAL thought here, not "cute" or "flamebait" or
aggressive Linux advocacy. I have no position on any of this (Sun,
Solaris, etc.) and could care less. I'm just trying to get "a pulse."

It will probably be quiet on the NG over the weekend, so if you have some
rational thoughts on this issue, please post them (with "OT" in the subject.)

Thanks,

Al Canton
