Linux server and remote connection.

Hi, do anyone has an experience with linux server?

I have an option to buy either a linux server at $700/year, or a
windows server at $1200 per year.

I think linux server is a better bargain. However, the windows server
has perks too. It comes with remote connection that I am familiar with.
Is there an equivalent in linux? How many applications run in linux?
