Gentlebeings:
I'm Yet Another Linux Newbie. I'm a mainframe zVM sysadmin by
trade looking to upgrade my skillset and thereby widening my
employment possibilities. I have a large collection of rather
old-but-probably functional PC hardware and I'm thinking that
the experience of building an interesting network would be both
educational and something to which to point with pride when
looking for employment.
My previous attempts at gaining Linux knowledge haven't gone
that well. At one point I grew so frustrated at trying to load a
Linux workstation that I threw the Debian CDs across the room.
I loaded Mandrake on a system identical to my Win 98 machine and
it ran incredibly slowly. I finally couldn't handle the annoyance
and started writing a science-fiction novel instead.
This time Things Will Be Different - I'm unemployed more-or-less
by choice (living with my Mom while she recovers from a health
condition) and I'll have the time to devote to the project (and
I'll be in a more receptive frame of mind).
What I'm asking for are recommendations on what distribution(s)
would be most suitable for the following. I'm looking for
functionality, not performance, so if something works at all
it's a success.
Compaq Proliant (dual 200mHz Pentium Pro)
Apache server
HP Celebris (dual 333mHz Pentium II)
Hercules s/390 emulator and VM/370 R6 (mainframe
operating system in the public domain)
HP Kayak (dual 333mHz Pentium II)
Hercules s/390 emulator and one of the
distributions of zSeries Linux
Dual 233mHz Pentium
NFS and FTP server
486 with an 83mHz Pentium Overdrive upgrade processor
running at 100mHz (hey, I need at least one 486)
Amanda backup server with two 4mm DAT drives
and a 4x CD burner
500mHz K6-2 - Linux workstation, just to say I have one.
I'm using a cable modem with a hardware router to do the NAT
and DHCP stuff for the Win systems. A dedicated router/firewall/
DHCP/DNS server would be interesting to add later.
I also have four identical 300mHz K6-2 systems earmarked
as a possible Beowulf-type cluster One Of These Days. I may
load another system or two with OS/2 just for grins.
I currently have running:
386 40mHz (why not; it works) - IBM DOS 2000 & Win 3.11
EPROM maker; the software is DOS based
500mHz K6-2 (this one) - Win NT
Internet browsing, word processing
500mHz K6-2 - Win 98SE
(down until I figure out why it's overheating)
Sound card, webcam, digital camera, 8x CD burner,
PCMCIA memory card drive to swap things with laptops
Any advice will be appreciated.
