Thanks for your note.
I had neglected to say in my original posting that I had looked through
the log files and found no evidence of problems.
I have, however, used your suggestion and used the 'nv' driver. I can
now see what I'm doing. Thanks for that.
Now, my next question is "How do I get the 'nvidia' driver going?
