Kristine:
your problem is very common: it is mostly lack of decent documentation, to
upgrade KDE. I guess that SUSE/NOVELL could have gotten involved and
written a decent automated procedure for update.

It seems that the release of 9.3 was an incentive to do not much, and focus
on 9.3 for who wnats KDE 3.4... and wait KDE 4.0 scheduled for summer!

After all Microsoft have also been playing the upgrade trade mill!
A few years ago, I had to update a very good NT to get USB... and the
Windows 2000 was really not that great! So MS does shine there either...
and after the upgrade it took me forever to get everything up and
running... and 2 huge service packs!
So compared to Windows Suse Linux does quite well... and at least you do not
have to fork $100+ to get new drivers!

By the way, I did update successfully to KDE3.4 using YAst2, and it works
fine. (But I see little immediat benefits... and a few new bugs!).

I did this in YAST2:
1) Change source of installation:
Added one line:

Status is ON
Name is (does not matter).

the URL is: ftp://ftp.gwdg.de
The path
is: /pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for9.2/yast-source

2) run "system Update".
It will take a while (~ 200MG to transfer from a busu server!), but it
should work!

At this time you may try it, I doubt you system will be worse than it is!
Good luck.
