Thanks for followup, Robert, and sorry for delay replying,
but I had to arrange to remove scsi card, etc, in order to
reproduce the original configuration.
In reply to your question, "Are you sure?", the answer
is, "Apparently not." I carefully collected all messages
in /var/log/messages (since the latest restart), like you
requested, along with dmesg output and various related /proc
information. But this time everything worked exactly like
you said it's supposed to, both with the scsi card installed
and without it. So all the output looks just fine.
Something must have been badly configured when it
wasn't working, but I can't seem to locate any relevant lines
in the messages file.
