With suspend-to-disk, yes. Suspend to disk means that it writes all
the contents of the memory to the swap partition. You have to tell
your kernel on boot (from lilo.conf or menu.lst in grub) the partition
it should resume the session from, that is the swap partition. Suspend
to disk is the same as turning of your computer completeley, with the
difference that it writes the content of your memory to swap.

No, its not necessary. Just make sure your swap partition is bigger
than your amount of memory.

I never got it to work until I installed Ubuntu hoary on my laptop. I
guess I could have gotten it to work on other distros, but I didn't
bother to patch, compile and install a kernel myself. So I guess the
ubuntu team has done what's necessary for me in their kernel patches.
