Or use "synaptics" or so on Debian as fancy GUI front-end to apt.

In any case, he should get rid of Lindows first, it's IIRC one of
those brain dead distro running anything as root? A security
nightmare. Perhaps he could try one of the numerous rpm based
distro, Fedora Core, Mandrake, Suse and alike.
