Even when the client software has nothing to do with how the malware is
spread, or with the hole being exploited in any way?

Sure, but it doesn't mean they will have anything remotely approaching the
effectiveness they reach on Windows. Windows has so many inherent flaws,
so many easy ways to spread viruses and worms, both in server space and
among regular users, that it's simply insane. By comparison, Linux is a
big stone fortress filled with armed troops defending it, while Windows is
a tree fort defended by children with water balloons who have to be home
for lunch.
