Can I use a SRC RPM for a different version of Redhat?

Hi all,

I'm running Redhat 7.3. It seems near impossible to find RPM's for
older versions of Redhat these days. I need to install cyrus'
imap-utils RPM to get the "imtest" utility, but there are no RPM's for
7.3 that I can find out there.

There are src rpm's for Redhat 9, for example. Is it a huge no-no to
install that on a 7.3 system? This is something that's always confused
me -- why are these src rpm's versioned? I mean, shouldn't they just
hook into standard libraries, and therefore work with any version of
redhat, as long as the dependencies are met?

thanks in advance, all.

allie
