Mounting a hard disk image ...

There is a nice trick where if you use dd to copy a hard disk partition
to a file you can use the "-o loop" option to mount the file as though
it was a hard disk partition.

This works great for files that contain images of partitions, but what
do you do if you imaged an entire disk? The mount command is much
happier when you use an image of a partition, not an image of a disk.
(Hint, it doesn't know what to do with the boot sector ...)

In my specific case, I'm archiving a 100MB Zip disk. I made an image
using "dd if=/dev/sdb of=zip.dd bs=512". The resulting zip.dd file is
not mountable as a partition using the loopback option. If I specify
the input file as /dev/sdb1 that works fine, but I want to archive the
entire disk, not just the one active partition.

Any ideas? I was thinking along the lines of a 'virtual hard disk' that
uses a file, much like the loopback option does for partitions in a
file. But Googling for 'virtual hard disk' doesn't shed any light ...

Regards,
Mike
