Creative has awarded a patent for searching through a music database
(U.S. Patent 6,928,433) which basically means searching through a tree
like

Artist - Album - Song Title

in which I can not see anything special.

Isn't it about time that the open source community started a project in
which some of its highly intelligent members join together in inventing
all kinds of software structures, and apply for patents for them, however
simple they may seem, just to block the money-sinking giants from getting
them.
Then this open source patent project could license some of the patents to
interested industry, but only use the revenues to pay for the patent
application fees. The 'inventions' themselves then would be published and
distributed under the open source licensing models, allowing non-profit
users to freely avail of them.

Some inventions could also prematurely be published on some
website, the address of which would then be submitted to the various
patent offices to be sure they will find the applications already
published, even before the money making software giants have had a chance
to 'invent' them, to be sure that they will find them in their literature
search prior to awarding the patents to others.
