urpmi rpmdrake.rpm restored the package manager.
according to rpm upon attempting to do rpm gcc......rpm it complained
the package was already installed. But once the package manager was
reinstalled and the machine rebooted ( it had difficulty identifying
the correct CD drives ) gcc & gcc+ where both not installed and it
quickly installed these and I'm now back to where I was two days before
I first posted.
Many thanks to the people that replied, as with any act of
perceverance, much was learnt. So ten minutes before friends were
turning up we were able to get slimserver running and the wonderful
sounds of the cardiacs echoed round the house.
Then the utility company turned the power off for ten minutes and the
circuit breaker on the upstairs ring ( this is the UK after all)
wouldn't reset. so we couldn't run the server anyway and cos it was
4.00 the local DIY shops had all just closed!.
I must stop breaking mirrors
