You are being logical, and after a while you will find that logic does not
apply to people.
Data are not important enough to people for them to make backups. But when
they lose it, they expect someone else to get it back for them, preferably
for free.
With an issue like this, would you not think it would be on the FAQ list by
now. In fact, _it is in the FAQs on this very newsgroup_, _reposted weekly_.
But our helpless mental cripples seem unable to read a newsgroup for a week
before posting (as suggested in one of those Internet for dummies type
books), incapable of reading a FAQ list, incapable or doing a Google search
in a newsgroup before posting... .
Yet we who try to answer questions are expected to answer the same questions
again and again every damned week.
No wonder our country and its economy are falling apart.
