You could go with the GRP packages. Just pick the ./iso/ image for your
architecture, and download the Packages CD /.iso/ as well.

Just follow the instructions on how to perform a Stage 3 install and on
how to install the GRP (Gentoo Reference Platform).

If you have another (and possibly more powerful) Gnu/Linux machine on
your private network, you can use /distcc/ for distributed compiling.
The Gentoo manuals cover all that.

Gentoo is as much bleeding-edge as you can take. ;-) Mandriva will also
soon be releasing their 2006 Edition - it's currently still in RC2
stage.

Because you want to support the Free Software Foundation, of course. :-þ

No seriously... If you're happy with FreeBSD, then I see no real
advantage of switching to Gnu/Linux. Both operating systems are
technically quite good, although Gnu/Linux may have a wider support in
software packages than FreeBSD.

You have the freedom to choose... ;-)
