Linux RPM verus Linux in self-extracting file

When I download Java from Sun's page, it has two choices for Linux
installation:

Linux RPM in self-extracting file
Linux self-extracting file

What's the differences between two? I am using Red Hat Linux 9, which
one I should choose?
