I had the impression that the kernel in question is part of some sort of an
embedded system. The people who compile such things are usually paid for
their work.

It's free as in speech, not as in beer. Many people pay good money for
products containing Free software, and others are paid for producing it.
I agree that there probably was good reason for deleting the feature.
