The problem may be that he has been so brainwashed by using OSs that are all
alike (e.g., a given version of Windows), that it has not occurred to him
that there are different distributions Linux that, while alike in most ways,
are very different in others. Thus, it may not have occurred to him that
different distributions, differently (and not always correctly) installed,
have different attributes and, therefore, he must specify just what he has
in order to establish a context in which his questions have any meaning.
