Make sure you're interpreting the output correctly. Like so:

samantha:~# ide-smart /dev/hda
Id= 3 Status=39 {Prefailure Online } Value=209 Threshold= 63 Passed
Id= 4 Status=50 {Advisory Online } Value=253 Threshold= 0 Passed
Id= 5 Status=51 {Prefailure Online } Value=253 Threshold= 63 Passed
[snip]

...this is OK; the first 3 tests passed.

samantha:~# smartctl -a /dev/hda
ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED
  3 Spin_Up_Time 0x0027 209 206 063 Pre-fail Always
[massive snip]

...so this is 209, when it gets to 63 it's pre-failure, worst it's ever
been was 206. This test passed. Repeat for all other lines from
ide-smart or smartctl -a.

How long what might take? dd_rescue and dosfsck will vary depending on
how big the partition is. Take a look at "dmesg | tail -n20" while
dd_rescue is running; if you see a bunch of "uncorrectable error:
/dev/hdaN sector 131072 additional sense code 0F00:1234" messages there,
you've got bad sectors and it's definitely time for a new disk NOW.

If you're at a university (larger is better, but small may work) then
there's a definite demand for part-time student labor. They'll even
work around your classes. Yes, the pay is lousy, but you might learn
something. Also, a new 40G IDE disk is about $50 according to
pricewatch.com . $50 is well within the range of most students; just
drink cheap beer for a week or 2. If you need a 300G drive, that'll be
about $140, which is a little trickier. HTH,
