I just *know* I'm gonna get flamed for this, but here goes.
I'm trying to help my sister-in-law fix her computer. I'm pretty
sure that her MBR is toasted. My Mandrake Live CD fires up OK in
her computer, but she can't boot from her hard drive, even though
the BIOS wants to. It's likely that I could install a Linux
distribution and everything would work fine. But, she'd rather
have her WinXP working again. Unfortunately, she bought the PC
with WinXP already installed and doesn't have the installation
CD. She'd also like to get her files back off the hard drive.
The good news is that she's been backing up her more important
files to CDROM -- "good user, good user". Is there a way to use
Linux tools to restore a WinXP MBR?
Thanks....
FWIW, before she had her own computer she used to use mine, which
runs Mandrake. She liked it, but she still bought a Windows box
for her own. So, I am gently coaxing her toward Linux.
