sudo seems to work (it asks for a password but sometimes seems to have
executed anyway)

How do I install gcc, make, etc. I have a CD (1 live and 1 install) but no
network. Someday maybe it will understand the modem.

In the base system. I can't let it come up in the fancy system or the
screen will go blank.
