I used to use old computes and configure them with 2 nic's and make
them into linux-based routers. It was fun and educational, but not
the best way to go, considering a $70 Linksys WRT54G or BEFSR41 does
the same thing without using nearly as much power and without making
any noise.
However, what you propose is still fun and educational if you have
the time and don't mind the power and noise use.
AOL doesn't use anything overly revolutionary in terms of networking,
so yes, a Linux approach will work with it just fine. Or any other
broadband router.
