Why do people get so annoyed about the simple fact that ease of use is
among the most important thing to most users and that if Linux can't
match the ease of use of Windows for almost all tasks, including
administrative ones, it has virtually no chance of widespread success
on the desktop? We have an army of Gnome and KDE programmers
volunteering their time and effort to make Linux easier to use, and
that these people are doing a wonderful job. I love most aspects of
Linux. However, the reason why I keep emphasizing the whole binary
compatibility issue is that I truly feel that a few sacred cows, most
importantly the unwillingness to work toward wide binary compatibility
of both application software and drivers between kernel revisions and
distros, are what is going to prevent Linux from becoming to as easy to
use as Windows, and therefore from ever becoming successful on the
desktop. This is not FUD. This is reality. If this were FUD, I would
be implying that these problems were "deep" and could not possibly be
solved.
