What's unclean about it, if it doesn't have any switch to force
batch mode or another tool?

Recently had some problem setting up persistent binding for hba
connected scsi tapes, all of the tools like scsidev were not
capable of doing the job. So went on to use the output of the
'inquire' tool piped to awk to construct the needed command,
works like a charm.

This is just how unix works, if you don't have the tool needed,
simply make up your own. ;-)
