Where are ACL file permissions saved?

I have just experimented how to assign file permission on a per-user basis
with setfacl.
I enabled ACL support by putting the acl option in fstab and successfully
tried to set some permissions.
I've seen also that ls -l command shows a + sign to confirm the setting.
What I'm not able to understand is: WHERE are these extended permission
SAVED?
I do not think they are saved in i-nodes, as they can be very "long" (many
user names and permissions)...
And, besides, what happens if I disable the acl mount option and then enable
it again? Are all acl permissions lost?

Thanks to anyone who will help me sort this out.
