So I've tested it using the first CD from the Fedora Core 4 set.
I lied earlier: I have seen the Anaconda installer before, but I
wasn't using Red Hat or Fedora. IIRC it was some sort of
Gentoo-based distribution with Anaconda slapped on (honestly, I
am not making that up).
Fedora offers several 'classes' of installation, so you can tell
it you're installing a desktop, server, or want to choose your
own packages for example. That's fine, but Anaconda offers you
no clues about which CDs will be needed until right at the very
end, when you're pressing the "Install the system now" button.
Apart from this Anaconda isn't that bad, it should be
particularly easy for a newcomer to use albeit inflexible for a
more experienced user.
What I found:
* A "Personal desktop" install requires CD1 and 2. You get
GNOME and other niceties.
* A "Workstation" install (which includes development
tools) requires all 4 CDs.
* A "minimal" install requires just CD1, Fedora's idea of
"minimal" is 277 packages and 644 MiB of disk used.
So the OP *might* be OK with just CD1 and CD2.
