For all the debating going on, most Linux/UNIX system scripts I have seen
run bourne or bash scripts. Bash means bourne again shell, so if you want
to be able to deal with the system scripts on most systems, I would suggest
bash. 

Kindly note that this is cross-posted to places other than linux groups;
which means bash isn't installed.
