You *could* do it this way, but I imagine that your distribution CD's
have a "rescue" option and this would be IMNSHO much easier to use.

You won't be able to boot *from the MBR* into Linux until you correct
the MBR, but your Linux system will still be there and you will be able
to access it using either the boot-floppy of which you wrote or the
"rescue" option from your CDs

That's because you don't want to put menu.lst on the boot floppy. It is
not currently in the MBR but in the /boot/grub directory on the
appropriate partition. You just want to leave it there. The boot floppy
will load stage 1 and will then look into your /boot/grub directory on
the hard drive for stage 2 (menu.lst)

Yes, that's right - you effectively have the equivalent to the start of
your MBR on the floppy, and that dioes not have a normal filesystem

Again that is correct, it all stems from your confusion about what is
needed on the boot floppy.

You don't need a file system for the reasons given above

Whilst I don't agree with your aims, they *are* achievable much more
easily than you think.

1 Make the boot floppy

2 Check that it works

3 Create a partition to contain Windows (don't rely on Windows to
respect your data when installing - it won't unless you give it
a dedicated partition).

4 Allow Windows to hijack the MBR and to pretend that it is the
only system on your PC

5 Use the floppy to boot into an Operating System or leave the
floppy out if you want to use the erzatz O/S

I suggest that you do it sooner rather than later
