Hi
I am thinking of purchasing an external USB hard disk drive for our OpenAFS (Debian Sarge) server to do vos dumps onto.
The current space requirements are about 22G, but could easily grow quite a lot in the future (this being an AFS cell and all). So, I am thinking of a factor of about 10x, i.e., about 200G.
Now, there are a few brands available for use - Iomega, BUSlink, Maxtor, LaCie, etc. I personally have used (and am using) an 80G USB external hard disk for personal backups, and in 3 years of usage, I have never had any problems.
However, Iomega tends to be a little more expensive than the rest, and if the price difference does not translate into a performance difference in this case (reliability being more important than speed - vos dumps supposed to be done only once a week or so), I would be open to suggestions for other brands (and even strategies other than an external hard disk). I want to set the system up for automated vos dumps and hence would want to avoid anything that requires extensive human intervention, like a stack of DVDs.
Any useful suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
I'd recommend an external enclosure with an internal drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Submit=BROWSE&manufactory=1671&bop=and&InnerCata=92
Cheaper and more flexible. I have used AMS enclosures and they work quite well.
