I've had pretty good luck with the larger Maxtor Onetouch drives. I have
a 300g or so drive that is USB2 compatible that works really well. But I
also did it a cheaper way. I bought a cheapo USB container and recycled
an older IDE drive and only spent a relative few bucks.

I've been very lucky lately on Debian with a variety of USB devices
incluiding "thumb drives", my Ipod, my Treo 650 and a few other odds and
ends.

Building one may save you a bit of money. I did notice that my
self-built drive/enclosure seemed to run a bit hotter; but for the amount
of time I've used it, it always behaved well. The more expensive Maxtor
Onetouch drives also work very well.
