This is a wind-up, isn't it? There aren't 'beings' with this level of
intellectual ability in the Universe for real, are there? Someone tell
me there aren't!

Clue one (free one): it's a cultural and literary allusion, and one so
elegant that it happens to work in a number of cultures and a number of
levels.

Clue two (this one's gratis too): even in Christianity, daemons aren't
intrinsically evil. Lucifer was after all one of the senior members of
the Christian god's entourage before he fell.
