How do they get any work done?

I was forced by circumstance to use Windows for a few days. I had forgotten just how annoying it is. They scan for viruses on booting, they scan when checking for mail, getting mail, reading mail, and sending mail. This when the ISP filters out all email-borne worms/viruses before they get anywhere near the individual machine. The antivirus program has to be updated daily, or it practically starts calling you names. Antispyware is almost as bad. Antispyware programs sweep regularly, and the registry is constantly guarded from unwanted changes. All this security scrutiny running constantly in the background stole so much processor time that it felt like it was running at about half-speed.
I ask you, with all that crap they have to run to keep themselves "safe" how do they ever get any real work done?
