something -- and I'm always afraid it will do something I don't want it to
do. But this is always configurable, and with modern environments like
gnome, easy.

Depends on the device. My Olympus was recognized as that, my new, much
cooler, Canon, is not.

It's easily done, though. You won't need to buy a case of beer for that
one, just one glass.

I have two ATI cards, and they work fine for me. I don't care about 3d
acceleration, as long as I can watch a movie.
