To be specific, they're in ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail/ and
~/.kde/share/config/kmailrc . The kmailrc file contains most of the
settings that you'll want, including encrypted passwords stored in the
config file.

Fixed that for you. Most Unix-ish mail clients, not just kmail, store
their mail in ~/Mail or ~/mail in mbox or mdir format. All Unix-ish
mail clients can read and write both mbox and mdir. HTH,
